About the Role

  • We are seeking an experienced payroll professional to support U.S. clients in managing payroll governance, compliance, benefits alignment, and advisory for growth-stage organizations. The role requires deep expertise in U.S. multi-state payroll operations, statutory compliance, labor legislation, benefits administration, and payroll systems. The position will partner closely with client leadership teams to establish scalable payroll frameworks, enhance controls, and ensure accurate and compliant payroll processes.

Job Description

Payroll Governance & Compliance

  • Manage end-to-end payroll governance across multiple U.S. states.
  • Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing aligned with federal, state, and local labor laws (FLSA, IRS, SUI, minimum wage, overtime, leave laws, etc.).
  • Lead payroll audits, reconciliations, and tax reporting activities.
  • Maintain compliance with statutory filings including W-2, W-4, 1099, 941, 940, SUI/SDI, and related requirements.

Consulting & Advisory for Growth-Stage Clients

  • Advise leadership teams (Founders, CFOs, HR) on scalable payroll frameworks, internal controls, and compliance.
  • Conduct process assessments and recommend improvements in accuracy, efficiency, and governance.
  • Support workforce planning, compensation models, classification (exempt/non-exempt), and multi-state expansion.
  • Provide guidance on M&A payroll integration and onboarding of new entities.

Benefits & Labor Administration

  • Oversee payroll-related benefits including medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, disability, HSA/FSA, commuter programs, and wellness benefits.
  • Ensure compliance with ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, and state-mandated programs.
  • Coordinate with benefits administrators to align payroll and benefits data, deductions, and reconciliations.

Payroll Technology & Systems

  • Provide hands-on support across U.S. payroll systems (ADP WFN, Paychex, Gusto, Paylocity, Justworks, Rippling, Workday, UKG, etc.).
  • Manage system configurations, pay schedules, tax setups, earnings/deductions, and integrations.
  • Lead payroll software implementation, migration, and automation initiatives.

Client Management & Reporting

  • Serve as the primary payroll advisor for client engagements.
  • Maintain strong client relationships with a consultative problem-solving approach.
  • Deliver payroll analytics, trend analysis, compliance updates, and monthly reporting.
  • Train client teams on payroll workflows, compliance changes, and system usage.

Qualifications

Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Preferred: CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) / FPC (Fundamental Payroll Certification).

Experience

  • 7–12 years of experience in U.S. payroll operations, payroll compliance, and governance.
  • Experience in multi-state payroll management preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting growth-stage or mid-market clients is desirable.
  • Proven background in payroll system implementation and process transformation.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with finance, HR, legal, and external auditors.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of U.S. federal and state labor laws, wage & hour rules, garnishments, child support orders, and statutory filings.
  • Deep knowledge of benefits administration and related regulations (ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA).
  • Ability to translate payroll legislation into operational controls and processes.
  • Proficiency in payroll systems, Excel, payroll GL integration, and data analytics.
  • Strong advisory, consulting, and client-management skills.
  • Ability to work in dynamic, high-growth, multi-state payroll environments.
